Hello, my name is Dr. Rebecca Marks. I am an art historian who writes about exhibitions, publications, and critical events in the world of the arts. My goal here is to demystify and democratise the study of art history for a global audience. Welcome to my Substack, The Culture Dump!

I post free articles on the second Tuesday of each month, 9am UK time. These range from exhibition reviews, to reading lists, to opinion pieces.

For paid subscribers, on the last Friday of each month, I post an extra piece of content — this could be an analysis of a painting, a video lecture, or an insight into my research.

I completed my PhD in English Literature and History of Art at the University of Cambridge in 2025. I specialised in the reception of the Italian Renaissance in British Art, with a focus on the Romantic painter William Blake. I also have a Masters in Italian Renaissance art (Courtauld Institute, 2020), and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature (University of Oxford, 2019).

My work has been published in The Cambridge Quarterly, The British Art Journal, Romanticism, and Eighteenth-Century Studies.

Currently, I am affiliated with The National Gallery, MUBI, and HENI Publishing.

I am a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
